Down south tastes sweet with Red Hill Mud
Ross and Cate from Red Hill Mud have been making deliciously naughty deserts ever-since returning from their honeymoon in Noosa. Cate explains: “I’ll never forget it. We were eating sticky date pudding and I looked at Ross and said we could make something better than this. So, we did.”
Launching Red Hill Mud in 1992, which was named after Red Hill’s rich ‘chocolaty’ earth where they lived, this pair of self-confessed chocoholics have continued to produce seasonally inspired comfort-first delights with sweetly sophisticated flavours. Cate continues: “We debuted at Red Hill Market. Our first product was chocolate mud pudding which made sense as the local land seemed to bleed brown. We started off there until we grew out of the property and now operate from Rye. Ross was born and bred on the Mornington Peninsula and I’ve been here for around 40 years! One of our children works with us and we’ve extended our product range to include sauces and syrups. Our mud cake and sticky date pudding are more popular than ever, but we also offer butterscotch, raspberry and chocolate salted caramel sauces to drip over anything. There’s also an orange Cointreau syrup and a passionfruit syrup in summer.”
Having graced the shelves of Peninsula Gourmet Emporium/Hamper Yourself for around a decade, Red Hill Mud makes a trip to Boundary Road in Dromana extra special whether you’re on your way to Sorrento, heading over to Western Port Bay or travelling back to town after a weekend away. Why? Because sticky date puddings and sweet sauces make great gifts or sumptuous standbys when unexpected guests drop in – or whenever!
